Property Manager Review
The Ministry of Justice has completed the review of the regulation of property managers that commenced in October 2008.
The review focussed on the relationship between property owners and property managers, the risks for property owners and whether property managers should be required to comply with any specific duties and obligations. The review examined residential, commercial and rural property management issues.
The review did not examine the relationship between tenants and property managers or owners who manage their own properties, as this relationship is already covered by existing legislation.
The Ministry of Justice published a consultation document in February 2009 and invited anyone with an interest in or experience of property management to make a submission. The Ministry received 138 submissions on the consultation document.
Outcome of the review
Following completion of the review, the Associate Minister of Justice, Hon Nathan Guy, announced on 2 July 2009 that no new occupational regulation would be imposed on property managers. A copy of the Minister's announcement is available at: www.beehive.govt.nz.
Available are copies of:
- the summary of submissions on the consultation document
- the Cabinet paper considered by the Domestic Policy Committee when making its decision on the outcome of the review, and
- the minute recording that decision.
The Committee's decision was confirmed by Cabinet on 8 June 2009.
