6 Energy

The 2006/7 Carbon Inventory indicated that energy use (electricity and gas) in the Ministry’s buildings accounted for a total of 59% of the Ministry’s Green House Gas Emissions.

Description

Auckland HC

Heating Controls - Final part of overall 3 year plan to fully upgrade and integrate the controls for better energy management and comfort control.

Hamilton HC

Emergency Lighting - New system has lower consumption but as this virtually never runs it is not that significant in terms of energy savings.

Huntly

Light fittings -Old fittings replaced with modern T8 technology. Power consumption reduced. Courtroom air-conditioning units upgraded. Some modest reduction in consumption due to newer technology.

Wellington AC

Installation of new air handling units and lifts – This will offer reduced fan power consumption due to better motor technology and better flow through the units. New lifts installed use the latest ‘Kone’ drive technology that will deliver significant savings in power consumption.

Wellington HC

Upgrade of building management system (BMS) and main plant strategies - Energy management improvements are expected. Further work is required on the VAV system to fully realise this.

New Plymouth

Replacement of Lift - A new ‘Kone Monospace’ lift was installed. The superior drive technology will result in significant reductions in power consumption over the old hydraulic unit.

Papakura

Major upgrade of air-conditioning units serving the courtrooms and some common areas - Expected reductions in power with more modern technology. Better zone control should also reduce overcooling and reheating that previously occurred.

Te Kuiti

New air-conditioning - installed in Courtroom, office and reception areas. Increased power usage in summer (little air-conditioning previously) but drop in winter due to reverse-cycle heating.

Napier

Lighting up-grade - work to stairs and cells. Change to T8 technology so power consumption will reduce.

Better metal halide and T5 fittings installed to improve light levels in the L1 Courtroom Foyer and also reduce power consumption.

Whakatāne

Air-conditioning - units were replaced throughout. New technology splits will significantly improve performance. Power consumption should improve with controls changes.

Rangiora

Heat pump for courtroom - Ducted plits installed to cover the courtroom, waiting area and corridor. Increased power usage in summer (little air-conditioning previously) but drop in winter due to reverse-cycle heating.

Waihi

New Lighting in Courtroom - Old fittings replaced with modern T8 technology. Power consumption reduced accordingly.

Rotorua

New lifts installed - using the latest Kone drive technology. Significant savings in power consumption.

6.3 2012 Target

1. To achieve a 20% reduction per FTE in direct[3] energy consumption.

Footnote

3 This does not include energy used in communal areas such as lobby areas of multi-tenanted buildings which the Ministry has little or no control over.
