Members of the Tribunal
Members of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal include a chairperson, deputy chairperson, lawyers and lay members.
The Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal consists of a chairperson, deputy chairperson, practitioners and lay members.
The Tribunal has two divisions, one chaired by the Chairperson of the Tribunal, the other by the Deputy Chairperson. The Chairperson is Judge D F Clarkson, and the Deputy Chairperson is Mr D J Mackenzie.
When a division of the Tribunal sits it comprises the Chair of that division, plus members drawn from the pool of lay and professional members. Two lay members and two professional members will be appointed to join the Chair of the division, to form a panel of five persons who will constitute the Tribunal for the particular matter concerned.
The two professional members of a panel will be either lawyers or conveyancers, depending on the nature of the matter the Tribunal is considering.
The 13 lay members of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal are profiled below.
- Christine Rowe (Warkworth)
- Ms Rowe is Director of Corporate Dynamics, a company concerned with private management consultancy. She has experience dealing with employment relations, mediation and advocacy and facilitation. She is a Justice of the Peace, is involved with non-profit community work such as Women's Refuge and is a lay member of the Benefits Review Committee.
- Bill Smith (Hibiscus Coast)
- Mr Smith began his career as a police officer in the United Kingdom before moving to New Zealand to take up a position as an administration manager. He has experience as a hearings commissioner and Judicial Justice of the Peace. Mr Smith has had involvement in the Rodney District Council for 26 years, including as a councillor.
- Jay Clarke (Waiheke)
- Until recently Mr Clarke was a Disputes Tribunal Referee and he has extensive mediation experience, including working on the Medical Council of New Zealand. He is involved in the Waiheke community as well as in conference, mediation and planning work with the greater community.
- Peter Shaw (Hamilton)
- Mr Shaw has been in practice as a chartered accountant since 1962. He is currently working as a part-time consultant for Vasey Child, and has previously acted as partner in several accountancy firms. Mr Shaw has arbitration experience in relation to accounting matters and has been involved in fundraising for the Neurological Foundation.
- Steve Morris (Papamoa)
- Mr Morris holds a variety of leadership roles in the Tauranga community. He is an Elder of Papamoa Baptist Church, Chair of the Papamoa Progressive Association, and a trustee of BayTrust. He is currently completing his master's thesis on resource and environmental planning and has experience teaching in Dubai as well as selling Real Estate.
- Alison de Ridder (Rotorua)
- Mrs de Ridder has 12 years' experience as adjudicator of the Tenancy Tribunal. She is also a competency reviewer for the Medical Council of New Zealand and prior to that held positions in relation to social services.
- Kenneth Raureti (Rotorua)
- Mr Raureti has extensive experience in the area of Human Resources and Employment Relations. He currently owns a Mediation, Business Management Services Consultancy Business. He has well-established professional relationships and extensive networks within the business community, Tourism, Iwi and Hapu Authorities, Employer organisations, Unions, Local Authorities and Government Departments. Mr Raureti has held memberships, some still current, with the New Zealand Police Disciplinary Panel, Employment Relations Authority, Department of Labour’s Mediation Service.
- Sandra Gill (Lower Hutt)
- Ms Gill has been a member of the New Zealand Parole Board since 2002, as well as being a guest lecturer at Victoria University in the field of criminology. She was standards manager at the Medical Council of New Zealand and a counsellor, social worker and programmes manager at Arohata Prison. She is involved with mental health work and counselling for Māori youth.
- Pele Walker (Wellington)
- Ms Walker is a mediator with the Human Rights Commission. She was previously the Executive Director of LEADR NZ, a professional organisation responsible for training and accreditation of mediators. She has worked in employment and industrial relations. She chairs the Pacific Arts Committee of Creative NZ, and was the inaugural Chair of the Pacific Women’s Economic Development Board and founding member of Pacifica Inc Wellington Central.
- Alasdair Lamont (Canterbury)
- Mr Lamont has been a lay member of the Canterbury District Law Practitioners' Disciplinary Tribunal since 1996. In addition to being a sheep farmer, he has held trustee roles in this region. Mr Lamont has held the position of chairperson of the Federated Farmers in Christchurch and serves his local community as a Justice of the Peace.
- Michael Gough (Lyttelton)
- Mr Gough is director of his own company, Wordstream Corporation Limited - the first Internet-based compilation of Māori-English dictionary resources. Mr Gough is a committee member of the Regional Medical Ethics Committee, is involved in sports coaching and is a former board member of his local marae.
- Dr Ian McAndrew (Dunedin)
- Dr McAndrew is a lecturer at the University of Otago specialising in employment relations. His academic background is in labour and industrial relations, which he studied in the United States and Australia. He is director of his company, New Zealand Mediators Limited, in which he acts as mediator and adjudicator in employment issues. Dr McAndrew has been a member of the Legal Aid Review Panel since 2002 and was an Employment Tribunal mediator between 1993 and 2002.
- Thursa Kennedy (Invercargill)
- Ms Kennedy currently holds the position of lay member of the combined Otago and Southland District Law Societies' Disciplinary Tribunal. She graduated as a nurse and joined the New Zealand Defence Force, holding the position of Director of Nursing Services from 1985 to 1991. She is involved in her community through the church, Rotary and the New Zealand Returned and Services' Association (RSA) and is a disability support advocate.
