Applying

If you're a tenant or landlord and want to refer a dispute to the Tenancy Tribunal, the first step is to complete an application and send it to the Department of Building and Housing with the $20.44 application fee.

You can get forms and pay fees by visiting a Department of Building and Housing office or visiting their website.

You can pay by EFTPOS if you visit an office or by Visa or Mastercard if you apply online through the Department's website. You can also pay the $20.44 fee at any Westpac branch.

Order a form

You can have a form sent to you by phoning 0800 TENANCY (0800 83 62 62) or pick one up from your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau.

After the Department of Building and Housing receives your application they will offer mediation for you and the other party involved.

Mediation

When you apply to the Tenancy Tribunal you will be offered a mediation appointment. At this meeting you and the other party discuss the problem, with help from an independent tenancy mediator, and try to agree on your own solution. Find out more about mediation.
